WAFCON 2026 Qualifiers: Falcons Captain Rasheedat Ajibade Reflects After Benin Hold Nigeria in Abeokuta — “We’ve Learnt Valuable Lessons

Rasheedat Ajibade Speaks After Nigeria’s Draw vs Benin — “We’ve Learnt Valuable Lessons” | WAFCON 2026 Qualifiers

Super Falcons captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, says Nigeria’s 1–1 draw against Benin Republic in Abeokuta serves as a valuable lesson for the reigning African champions despite qualifying 3–1 on aggregate for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria went into the return leg with a two-goal advantage after winning 2–0 in the first leg in Cotonou, but the visitors stunned the hosts by forcing a draw on Tuesday evening.

Speaking after the game, Ajibade admitted that the team’s performance was below standard but stressed that such games provide learning experiences and motivation to improve.

“We expected a tough match because we saw what happened in the first leg,” Ajibade said. “Benin had nothing to lose and gave everything. A point against the Super Falcons means a lot to them, and you could see how they celebrated it. We just need to keep our competition level high and push ourselves to be better.”

Ajibade, who captained the side once again, expressed deep appreciation to the coaching crew and her teammates for trusting her leadership.

“Being the captain of these amazing, talented, professional players is a huge honour,” she said. “I’m grateful for the confidence the coach and everyone have in me. It motivates me to keep leading by example.”

The Atletico Madrid forward also extended gratitude to her club, national teammates, and fans after receiving a recognition award at the Nigeria Pitch Awards, dedicating it to everyone who has supported her football journey.

“To the next generation of girls — keep believing, keep working, your dreams are valid,” Ajibade concluded.

The Super Falcons will now focus on preparations for the 2026 WAFCON finals, where they aim to defend their continental title as well focus on picking one of the four available 2027 FIFA World Women availble at the 2026 WAFCON.
