The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Smart Adeyemi, has urged the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to invite the Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to come and explain the reason behind the redesigning of the naira notes.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, which was also shared by The Punch on Saturday May 27th, Adeyemi claimed that the new naira notes policy was a calculated attempt to stop All Progressives Congress (APC) from winning the 2023 election, and now that the APC won, Tinubu should invite Emefiele to come and explain what happened and those that were involved.
Adeyemi lamented the hardship that the new naira notes policy brought upon Nigerians, and said that the situation could have descended into anarchy if not for the intervention of the judiciary.
He said that several people died during that period just because they could not have access to their money, and that because others survived does not mean they should not care about those that died.
He said – “People died in that period, and people developed strokes because they couldn’t have access to their money. And because you and I survived, we should not care about those who died for what was not their making? Some people died due to the situation at that time, that policy killed some people innocently.”
Speaking further, he said – “Tinubu should not forget this, because the calculated attempt then was to stop APC from winning. Now that we have won, in order not to allow a recurrence, we were told that they have redesigned the naira, but where are the new notes that have been redesigned?”
