We’ll defend their rights, Women Affairs Minister Sulaiman-Ibrahim reacts to arraignment of minors

Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Minister of Women Affairs has said that the ministers would defend the rights of the children arraigned before a court in Abuja on Friday.

The minister in a statement expressed worry over the minors’ arraignment and the outrage it has caused within the public.

He assured that his ministry is taking active steps to ensure the issue is promptly addressed.

Noting that the right of every child is enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended, the Child Rights Act, and international treaties to which Nigeria is a signatory, he said the children are entitled to protection.

He said, Communications are underway with relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Justice, the judiciary, and correctional institutions, to ensure that these children’s cases are expedited and heard in juvenile courts as mandated by law.”

He added that the ministry is working with child rights advocates to prevent any harm and ensure the children are provided with post-release support, counselling and reintegration into society.

“Protecting the rights of all children remains a priority, and every effort will be made to guarantee their safety, welfare, and justice,” he said.
