What Tinubu Said While Declaring Open Justice Summit

President Bola Tinubu has urged the judiciary to implement reforms that will strengthen the justice system and support Nigeria’s economic development. He emphasized the importance of safeguarding basic human and political rights, ensuring security, and providing justice for all Nigerians.

Speaking at the opening of the National Summit on Justice 2024, Tinubu called for collaboration among government institutions, including the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary, to address the challenges facing the country. He stressed the need for the judiciary to align with the tenets of his administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” particularly in areas such as inclusivity, fairness, rule of law, and anti-corruption.

Tinubu acknowledged his administration’s commitment to impartiality and adherence to constitutional principles. He highlighted that the summit presented an opportunity for the justice sector to identify system changes and reforms that would maximize the benefits of investments in the sector.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented Tinubu at the event, emphasized the government’s determination to implement policies and promises through legal and just means, creating opportunities for Nigerians.

To support the judiciary, Tinubu outlined several measures taken by his administration, including doubling funding in the 2024 budget, appointing a full complement of Supreme Court Justices, and approving a significant increase in judges’ salaries.

Despite progress made, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for a functional justice system that can support economic growth, guarantee rights, and provide security and justice for all. He called for policy innovation, citizen-centered reform, and legislative changes to address challenges.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended stakeholders for their commitment to building a robust judicial system. Chief Justice of Nigeria Okukayode Ariwoola emphasized the need for holistic reforms to meet public expectations. Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi highlighted the importance of a revised national policy on justice to advance the sector.
