Two Manchester United players reportedly left the Old Trafford Stadium while the Europa League quarter-final second-leg game against Lyon was ongoing due to personal issues.
At the end of the game, Manchester United recorded a 6-4 aggregate win over Lyon. They scored three goals in a remarkable six-minute stretch during extra time, securing their place in the semi-finals of the Europa League.
However, the victory was bittersweet as two players had to leave Old Trafford at halftime due to urgent family matters, which were reported to be unrelated. Noussair Mazraoui was substituted by Luke Shaw, while Victor Lindelof did not return to the bench for the second half.
Manager Ruben Amorim addressed the situation, stating, “We faced a challenge with Noussair at halftime. Vic had to depart due to a personal issue.”
The coach chose not to elaborate further but noted that Shaw was originally scheduled to play only 30 minutes as he continued to recover from a lengthy injury.
In a surprising turnaround, Shaw ended up on the pitch for over 75 minutes after United squandered their two-goal lead, leading to extra time.
Despite being down to ten players, Lyon managed to score twice in extra time, including a penalty conceded by Shaw.
In a fantastic display of resilience, Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire found the back of the net in the 114th, 120th, and 121st minutes, achieving an outstanding comeback.
