World Cup Qualification Setback for Nigeria After Victor Osimhen Fallout

Victor Osimhen became the latest star who will miss the 2026 World Cup after Nigeria lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo in their qualifying play-off final. Osimhen himself was withdrawn at the break, as the underdogs came from behind to claim a penalty shoot-out victory on neutral ground.

It is the second time in a row that Nigeria have fallen at the play-off stage. They suffered an away goals defeat against Ghana when the two sides faced off for a spot at the 2022 World Cup.

Both Nigeria and DRC had to play off after finishing second in their respective groups. with the semis and final held in Morocco. After beating Gabon and Cameroon respectively, they faced a straight shoot-out to keep their dreams alive.

Frank Onyeka gave Nigeria an early lead, only for Mechak Elia to equalise before half-time, and Osimhen didn’t reemerge for the second period after appearing to be moving gingerly at the break. It was still 1-1 after 90 minutes, setting up a tense extra-time battle, and in the end the two nations had to be separated on penalties.

The Congolese victory means they will be Africa’s representatives in the inter-confederation play-offs in March. There, they will be joined by New Caledonia, Bolivia and further yet-to-be-determined teams from Asia and North America.

For Nigeria, Osimhen isn’t the only big name star left lamenting a failure to qualify. Atalanta star Ademola Lookman and Fulham trio Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze were among the others to start what would end up being their country’s final qualification match.
