Yahaya Bello: Court Orders EFCC Chairman To Appear For Contempt

A Kogi State High Court in Lokoja has summoned the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, to appear before the court on May 13, 2024. The order stems from allegations that the EFCC violated a court order issued on February 9, 2024.

On April 17, 2024, EFCC operatives attempted to arrest the immediate past Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, despite a court order prohibiting such action pending the resolution of an ongoing case.

In response, Bello filed a motion for contempt, arguing that the EFCC’s actions violated the court order. Justice I. A. Jamil, after reviewing the evidence, ruled that the EFCC’s actions constituted contempt.

Justice Jamil ordered the issuance of a Form 49 Notice to Olukoyede, requiring him to appear before the court and explain why an order of committal should not be issued against him. The judge also ordered the service of the notice at the EFCC’s corporate headquarters in Abuja.

The court adjourned the matter to May 13, 2024, for Olukoyede to appear and respond to the contempt charge.
