BREAKING: Police Sack ASP Usman Over Fatal Encounter With Mene Ogidi in Effurun

The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has disclosed that Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman and others implicated in the extrajudicial killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, have been dismissed from service.

He added that the affected officers will also face prosecution following their dismissal from service.

Naija News reports that Disu made the disclosure while addressing newsmen at the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Wednesday.

He described the April 26 incident, which led to the death of Ogidi, as “criminal and unprofessional,” stressing that such conduct has no place in the police force.

The IGP disclosed that the principal suspect, ASP Usman, alongside other officers involved, have been transferred from the Delta State Command to Abuja to face disciplinary proceedings.

He said the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC) immediately took up the case, while three inspectors were subjected to an Orderly Room Tribunal.

According to Disu, investigations established that ASP Usman violated Force Order 247, which regulates the use of firearms, as well as standard operating procedures.

Based on the committee’s findings, the Police leadership has recommended the immediate dismissal of all officers involved in the incident and has directed that they be handed over to the relevant judicial authorities for prosecution for unlawful homicide upon their removal from service.

The recommendations have been forwarded to the Police Service Commission for final ratification.

Furthermore, the IGP distanced the Police Force from the actions of the officers, noting that they acted outside established rules and the core mandate of the force.

“No uniform is a license to kill,” he said.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and assured Nigerians that justice would be served transparently. Disu also urged residents of Delta State and the general public to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.

“The era of impunity is over,” he added.

It would be recalled that a viral video showed Ogidi sitting on the ground with his hands tied behind his back before he was shot at close range by a Police Officer.

The development sparked widespread outrage on social media.

The killer cop was subsequently identified as ASP Nuhu. He was arrested and moved to Abuja for disciplinary action over the incident.
