The Rivers State House of Assembly addressed Governor Siminalayi Fubara as “madam” in an official letter amid ongoing impeachment proceedings against him.
On Thursday, the Rivers State lawmakers began impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, following a motion moved by Major Jack, the leader of the House.
The motion, which was based on charges of gross misconduct, was signed by 26 members of the House. The charges are part of a broader political confrontation that has gripped the state, with tensions running high between Governor Fubara and rival political forces.
During the plenary session, the Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, confirmed that the formal notice of allegations would be served on the governor within seven days, as required by law.
In an unexpected twist, the Rivers State House of Assembly served the Governor with a notice of gross misconduct but addressed him as “madam” in the official letter.
The letter, dated January 8, 2026, was signed by Amaewhule, and was meant to notify Governor Fubara of the impeachment proceedings launched against him.
The letter read in part, “I received a copy of the Notice of Allegations of Gross Misconduct dated 5th January 2026 and brought against you by twenty-six (26) members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“Pursuant to section 188 (1) and (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I hereby forward to you a copy of the said Notice of Allegation of Gross Misconduct received by me on the 8th day of January 2026.”
The Speaker requested that the Governor respond to the allegations in accordance with the constitutional provisions governing such proceedings. The notice was also sent to Ngozi Odu, the Deputy Governor, who was correctly referred to as “madam.”
This development marks the latest chapter in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, which intensified last month after the House accused the governor of unauthorised spending.
Most of the Rivers lawmakers are loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who has openly campaigned against Fubara’s re-election.
Wike, a key political figure in the state, had previously accused Governor Fubara of reneging on a peace agreement they had signed before President Bola Tinubu lifted the state’s emergency rule, which allowed Fubara to resume office.
