BREAKING: CBN Addresses Validity of Old Naira Notes Amid Cash Scarcity

Nigerians have been reassured that there are no plans to withdraw the old N1,000, N500, and N200 notes from circulation.

This clarification was provided by the Central Bank of Nigeria on Friday, December 13.

The CBN stated that claims regarding the withdrawal of these notes are baseless.

Furthermore, the CBN affirmed that both the old and new versions of the N1,000, N500, and N200 denominations remain legal tender.

Hakama Ali, the acting director of corporate communications for the CBN, urged the public to disregard reports concerning a deadline for the use of the old notes.

She stated, “To reiterate the Bank’s previous clarifications and offer further assurance, the CBN wishes to emphasise that the recent Supreme Court ruling granted on November 29, 2023, permits the indefinite concurrent circulation of all versions of the N1,000, N500, and N200 denominations of the Naira,” Ali said.

She urged Nigerians to ignore such claims and continue using both old and new notes for their financial transactions.
