BREAKING: NFF, Super Eagles Await FIFA Verdict Today Over DR Congo Player Eligibility Dispute

Millions of Nigerian football fans are holding their breath as FIFA prepares to deliver its verdict today on a petition lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) against the Fédération Congolaise de Football Association over alleged player ineligibility.

The dispute stems from Nigeria’s painful 4-3 penalty shoot-out defeat to DR Congo in Morocco last November in the African play-off final for the 2026 World Cup.

The loss dashed the Super Eagles’ hopes of securing qualification for the tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.

On 15 December 2025, the NFF formally petitioned FIFA, alleging that six Congolese players who recently switched international allegiance were not eligible to feature in the decisive fixture. FIFA has since reviewed the complaint and is expected to make its position known on Monday, 16 February 2026.

Should the ruling favour Nigeria, the Super Eagles would be reinstated into the six-nation Intercontinental Play-off next month, keeping alive their dream of reaching the 2026 finals.

NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, previously expressed confidence in the federation’s case. “We have a good case,” Sanusi said. “As far as we are concerned, we have a strong case, and we are awaiting FIFA’s decision on the complaints we have lodged.”

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, also voiced optimism in earlier remarks, stating his belief that Nigeria would receive a favourable outcome.

Meanwhile, reports suggest DR Congo are banking on the influence of Véron Mosengo-Omba, Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football and a Congolese national. According to Sports247, senior football figures from Congo and other Francophone countries are lobbying within FIFA circles.

“According to very reliable sources, Mosengo-Omba and top football executives from Congo and some Francophone countries are allegedly using their strong influence in FIFA to lobby for a favourable decision in this matter,” Sports247 report stated.

“They know the seriousness of the petition and are scared that FIFA could decide in favour of Nigeria based on leaked information and available evidence. His influence in Africa and World football will come in handy for DR Congo.” See more
