A traditional monarch from the South East, Dr Lawrence Agubuzu, the Eze Ogbunechendo of Ezema Olo Kingdom, on Tuesday, prevailed on President Bola Tinubu to set the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, free.
He also advised that Kanu can be returned to his place of exile in Kenya, lamenting that his incarceration was fuelling agitation among the youth in the region and making the traditional rulers irrelevant among their people.
Igwe Agubuzu took to the 2026 National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health organised by the presidency at the State House, Abuja, to appeal to the conscience of the President on the issue of Kanu.
“Bring this man out. If we don’t want him in Nigeria, return him to Kenya or London, where they took him from.
“Please do something about this. We cannot make progress in this country if we don’t tell ourselves the truth,” Agubuzu told Tinubu in plain terms.
The summit, themed “The Role of Traditional and Religious Leaders in Advancing the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative,” was convened to deepen community engagement in health sector reforms.
The summit also witnessed the signing of a compact by traditional and religious leaders committing to championing healthcare delivery within their domains.
The event took a dramatic turn while Agubuzu was giving his goodwill message; he told the President in plain terms about Kanu’s fate.
“I must tell you, Mr President, that personally I don’t feel very happy because you were not here in the morning when the Ooni of Ife gave the opening remarks and was encouraging us to work as one,” he began, referring to the Ooni who had rallied traditional rulers to work as a united national family.
