The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened an investigation into what it described as potentially unacceptable behaviour following a heated altercation between players at the end of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria.
CAF disclosed this in a statement on Monday, warning that disciplinary measures could follow if those involved are found guilty.
According to Africa’s football governing body, the incident has been formally referred to its disciplinary board for thorough investigation.
“CAF has referred the matters to the disciplinary board for investigation and has called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons were to be found guilty of any wrongdoing,” the statement read.
Naija News reports that the development comes after tensions flared on the pitch at the end of Saturday’s match in Marrakesh.
Nigeria had defeated Algeria 2-0 in the quarter-final encounter, with second-half goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams sealing the Super Eagles’ place in the semi-finals.
However, the impressive victory was overshadowed by post-match scenes as players from both sides clashed, prompting concerns over player conduct and sportsmanship.
Any disciplinary action arising from the investigation could potentially affect Nigeria’s preparations for their semi-final showdown against hosts Morocco, scheduled for Wednesday.
CAF also confirmed that it is investigating incidents from Friday’s quarter-final match between Morocco and Cameroon.
The hosts secured a 2-0 victory in Rabat, but the encounter was marred by controversy, with the Indomitable Lions expressing strong dissatisfaction with the officiating.
Cameroon players and officials were particularly angered by the referee’s decision to deny them a penalty following a challenge on Manchester United forward Bryan Mbeumo in the second half. The incidents have added to growing debates over officiating standards and player conduct at the ongoing tournament, as CAF seeks to maintain discipline and order in the latter stages of the competition.
