Social activist Aisha Yesufu has urged opposition figures Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to reshape their political messaging as the country gradually moves toward the 2027 general elections.
She said campaign strategies must reflect the harsh economic realities faced by many Nigerians, stressing that hunger and rising living costs now dominate public concern.
Yesufu made the remarks in a post shared on the social media platform X on Thursday. In the post, she argued that the worsening economic situation has pushed many citizens into survival mode.
According to her, ordinary Nigerians are no longer moved mainly by political rhetoric or promises. Instead, their immediate worry is how to afford food and basic necessities.
The activist noted that economic hardship has weakened people’s ability to engage deeply with political arguments. She suggested that opposition leaders must begin to communicate with voters in a language that directly connects with their daily struggles.
In her view, political campaigns must combine policy discussions with practical gestures that show an understanding of the suffering faced by citizens.
Yesufu maintained that the economic pressure on households did not happen by chance. She claimed that many Nigerians have been intentionally pushed into poverty through economic conditions that drained their purchasing power while the prices of food and other essentials kept rising.
She wrote: “Citizens were deliberately impoverished, monies taken away from their pockets and food made expensive so that little tokens will matter to them.
