BREAKING: AMVCA announces date for its 2024 awards

The Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA) has said its 10th edition of the awards will be held in Lagos on May 11, 2024.

The award organisers at a press conference held on Tuesday said this year’s ceremony will span two days — between May 10 and 11 — and will celebrate film production talents, culture, fashion, music, and other elements of African entertainment.

The organizers added that nominees list for this year’s edition will also be out on March 24.

Speaking on the nominations for each category, the organisers said it is subjective to “specific criteria and processes” by the jury.

“The nominations of the AMVCA are determined by specific criteria and processes determined by the jury in conjunction with Delloite,” they said.

“Some of the key criteria taken into consideration for nominations include the eligibility period, categories, the submissions process and voting process.”

In her welcome speech, Busola Tejumola, head of content and West Africa Channels at MultiChoice, described the 10th AMVCA as a celebration to mark a decade of brilliance, innovation, and the sheer magic of African storytelling on screen.

“The AMVCA has established itself as the benchmark to excellence in the African film industry. This edition is not just the celebration of excellence in filmmaking, but also a heritage of an award that has improved careers and boosted talent development on the continent,” she said.

“For this edition, we received entries from films and talent across Africa. Shortlisting has begun and we will now move to the judging phases.”

Femi Odugbemi, the ace film director and producer, was also announced as the head judge for the 10th AMVCA.

“For this special edition, we are making changes to the award categories. The Best Actor and Best Actress categories will now be determined by the jury. We are also delighted to announce veteran film director, producer and writer, Femi Odugbemi, as the Head Judge for the 10th AMVCA,” Tujumola added.

“In partnership with our sponsors, Amstel, Pepsi. Martell, and Promasidor, we call on Africa to join in this celebration, as we begin with the announcement of final nominees in each category, live across all Africa Magic channels, on March 24, at 8pm. The voting portal will open immediately after the announcement.”

On his part, Odugbemi said: “This prestigious award is celebrated for its unwavering dedication to excellence, and the jury remains steadfast in ensuring only the most outstanding works earn a spot on the nomination list”.

“Having served as the head judge in previous editions, I can unequivocally state that evaluating the remarkable submissions by talents across Africa is an extremely challenging task I assure everyone that the final selection will truly represent the best in the field.”

The organisers had earlier revealed that some changes had been made to this year’s edition of the award ceremony.

One of such major changes is that the award categories have been reduced from 33 to 27, adding that the development was in order “to meet global trends and standards”.

The 10th edition of AMVCA will now see winners in 25 categories — including 2 special recognition awards.
