BREAKING: Davido’s Misstatement on Nigeria’s Tribes Sparks Controversy

Afrobeat sensation Davido has stirred controversy after incorrectly asserting that Nigeria is comprised of only three tribes: Yoruba, Igbo, and Benin.

The singer made the erroneous claim while hosting American content creator Kai Cenat, who is in Nigeria for a documentary. During the interaction in Lagos, Davido stated, “We have three tribes in Nigeria. There’s Yoruba. My father is Yoruba. And in Nigeria, wherever your father is from, that’s where you are really from. So my father is Yoruba. My wife is from Igbo. And my mother is from Benin. I’m three tribes in one.”

However, Davido’s statement contradicts official data from the National Bureau of Statistics, which indicates that Nigeria boasts 371 distinct tribes, with the majority comprising Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba.

The singer’s misstatement has sparked debate and criticism on social media, with many Nigerians pointing out the diversity and richness of the country’s cultural heritage beyond the three tribes mentioned by Davido.
