The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, as the new Secretary of its Board of Trustees (BoT).
The decision was reached during an expanded emergency meeting of the board held in Abuja.
Top leaders of the party gathered in Asokoro for the meeting, which lasted for two days. The session focused on reviewing issues affecting the party’s leadership and internal structure. Discussions also centred on recent political developments within the party.
At the end of the deliberations, the board unanimously endorsed Aliyu for the role. The announcement was made through a communiqué presented by the Chairman of the BoT, Senator Adolphus Wabara, on Wednesday.
The statement explained that the appointment followed provisions contained in the party’s constitution.
“The BoT, pursuant to Section 32 of the Constitution of the PDP (as amended in 2017), unanimously approved the appointment of Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu as the Secretary of the Board.”
Party leaders said the expanded meeting was convened to carefully assess the current leadership situation in the party.
The discussions came shortly after a judgment delivered by the Court of Appeal on March 9, 2026, which prompted fresh consultations within the party’s hierarchy.
The board noted that its deliberations were aimed at strengthening the internal framework of the PDP and ensuring stability within the organisation.

Members also stressed the need for unity among party stakeholders as the PDP continues to reposition itself ahead of future political activities.
Aliyu, a former governor of Niger State, is regarded as one of the party’s experienced figures. He previously served two terms as governor and has remained active in party affairs since leaving office.
