The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that he will personally handle his defence in his ongoing terrorism case.

Kanu is currently facing a seven-count charge filed against him by the Federal Government.

The development occurred on Thursday morning when his lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi, a former Attorney-General of the Federation, announced that he and his legal team would no longer represent the IPOB leader.

Kanu Takes Over His Defence

When the matter was called, Agabi told the court that Kanu had decided to take full control of his defence.

Following this, other Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) involved in the case also withdrew their appearance.

Confirming the move, Kanu told the court he would represent himself for the time being but hinted that the situation could change later.

Judge’s Offer Rejected

Presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, asked whether he should assign a counsel to assist Kanu, but the defendant politely declined the offer.

During his address to the court, Kanu also argued orally that the court lacked jurisdiction to try him.
