New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dismissed reports claiming that its national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, held talks to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) or made demands for a share of the ruling party’s structure.
Reacting to the reports, the NNPP’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the former Kano State governor was never involved in any discussion about leaving the party for the APC.
He described the claims as false and misleading, insisting that Kwankwaso never contemplated a defection.
Johnson expressed concern that what he called outright fabrications were being published prominently in national newspapers, noting that such reports were not only untrue but damaging.
According to him, there was no meeting at any time between Kwankwaso and President Bola Tinubu, nor with any representatives linked to the APC, where issues of defection or negotiations were discussed.
He also faulted a recent report that attempted to give “details” of why Kwankwaso’s alleged move to the APC supposedly failed, including claims that he demanded 20 per cent control of the party’s structure.
Johnson said the story was entirely fictitious, stressing that no such engagement ever took place.
The NNPP spokesperson urged Nigerians to disregard what he described as a coordinated media campaign aimed at tarnishing Kwankwaso’s image.
He maintained that the allegations were a failed attempt to create disaffection and portray the NNPP leader in a negative light.
Johnson added that the rumours gained traction following political realignments in Kano, after which claims emerged suggesting that the APC fell out with Kwankwaso over alleged excessive demands.
He insisted that the narrative was baseless and reaffirmed that Kwankwaso remains firmly in the NNPP with no plans to join the ruling party.
