Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the former Governor of Abia State, has expressed his sorrow at the passing of Chief Dubem Onyia, the former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.
Onyia, who served as a minister from 1999 to 2003 and was elected to the House of Representatives in the same year, passed away on Monday at an Abuja hospital following a brief illness.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Kalu hailed Onyia as a distinguished diplomat, astute politician, and devoted patriot, whose contributions to Nigeria’s foreign relations and national development were significant.
“The news of Chief Dubem Onyia’s death is profoundly saddening. He was a highly respected statesman who played an essential role in enhancing Nigeria’s international relations and fostering national unity. His legacy as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and in various pivotal roles will always be remembered,” Kalu stated.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to Onyia’s family, the government and people of Enugu State, as well as the diplomatic community, offering prayers for the repose of his soul.
Onyia also held the position of Chairman for several important international commissions, including the National Boundary Commission and the São Tomé and Príncipe Joint Boundary Commission. Additionally, he was a trustee of the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Foundation and received numerous national and international accolades.
