Former military Head of State, retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the deaths of suspected illegal miners who reportedly died while in custody in Niger State.
Babangida described the incident as tragic and disturbing, stressing the need for authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine their actual causes.
According to Sahara Reporters, the former military ruler made his position known through Dr Danladi Umar Abdulhameed, the Tambarin Kagara.
The former Head of State expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and commended the Niger State Government for its response to the incident.
He particularly welcomed the state government’s decision to establish a committee of inquiry and conduct medical and forensic examinations to determine what led to the deaths.
Babangida said the investigations were necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident and enable the relevant authorities to take appropriate action based on the findings.
He urged the authorities to ensure that the investigation is conducted thoroughly, transparently and impartially, noting that its outcome should provide answers to the families of the deceased and residents of Niger State.
The retired general also appealed to residents, particularly youths and relatives of those who died, to remain calm while the investigation continues.
He warned against actions that could escalate tensions or undermine peace and security in the state, urging all concerned parties to allow the appropriate authorities to complete their work.
Babangida expressed hope that the inquiry and forensic examinations would clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths and provide a factual basis for any necessary action by the authorities.
