Judges Slam Trump 75 Times Over First Amendment Violations

President Donald Trump’s second term has seen a growing number of legal setbacks, with federal judges repeatedly ruling that his administration has violated constitutional free speech protections.

Although Trump campaigned on promises to defend free speech and claimed he would protect Americans from censorship, a new investigation suggests that many of his own actions have done the opposite. According to a report by Reuters, federal judges have issued at least 75 rulings finding that the Trump administration infringed on constitutional rights, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom of the press.

A large number of these cases were linked to the administration’s actions against people and groups who publicly supported Palestinians or criticized Israel. In one major case in September, a federal judge appointed by former President Ronald Reagan ruled that the administration had acted unlawfully by cancelling visas and deporting foreign students and university staff because of their views on the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

In his ruling, Judge William Young strongly criticized the administration’s actions. He said the president appeared to misunderstand one of the most basic principles of the U.S. Constitution—that the government cannot punish people simply because it disagrees with what they say. The judge warned that this approach poses a serious threat to Americans’ right to free speech.

The Reuters investigation also highlighted several other court decisions against the Trump administration. Judges ruled against actions targeting law firms that had represented Trump’s political opponents, the cancellation of research grants and funding for universities seen as being out of step with the administration’s political views, and the use of force against protesters exercising their constitutional rights.

Trump has frequently responded by attacking judges who ruled against him. He has accused them of being politically motivated activists and questioned their impartiality. While many of the rulings came from judges appointed by Democratic presidents, Reuters found that at least 10 of the decisions against Trump were made by judges appointed by Republican presidents as well.

Many of the legal challenges were brought by media organizations, universities, civil rights groups, and other organizations that argued the administration’s actions violated the Constitution. In many cases, they were challenging executive orders signed by Trump that they believed unfairly targeted individuals or groups based on their political views or beliefs.

Throughout his second term, Trump has used executive orders to challenge diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, policies related to gender identity, and other issues that he has made central to his political agenda. Critics argue that some of these actions were aimed at punishing people and institutions that disagreed with him politically rather than enforcing the law fairly.

With Congress under Republican control, many of Trump’s executive actions have faced little resistance from lawmakers, leaving federal courts as the main check on his administration. As judges continue to strike down some of these policies, critics argue that the legal record raises serious questions about Trump’s commitment to protecting free speech and other constitutional freedoms, despite his repeated promises to defend them.
