The Benin monarch, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of 17 Nigerian Army personnel in Okuama, where they were on a peacekeeping mission.
The Oba conveyed his condolences during a visit by the 4-Brigade Commander of the Nigerian Army, Brigadier-General Ebenezer Oduyebo, to his palace in Benin City, Edo State.
In a statement released by the Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, the traditional ruler urged Nigerians to rally around the families of the slain soldiers to help them cope with their loss.
Furthermore, Oba Ewuare II extended his well-wishes to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Taoreed Lagbaja, for his unwavering commitment to duty.
Oba Ewuare II said: “I think the Army should be appreciated by Nigerians a lot for what they are doing. I want to quickly express our condolences to the Army on the killings that happened recently in Okuoma. It was terrible.”
“We have heard different versions of what happened. Whatever story they are going to tell doesn’t really justify the soldiers being killed like that. I think Nigerians should support the Army. The Army is seen to be disciplined. It is a Force to be reckoned with, and should not be treated anyhow.”
The Benin king offered a prayer to the divine powers, seeking protection for the members of the Nigerian military and security forces, as well as their families, from any potential harm.
In his initial statements, Brigadier-General Oduyebo expressed his allegiance to Oba Ewuare II, appreciating the king’s efforts in enhancing the prestige of royalty. The military officer also requested the monarch’s blessings, prayers, and cooperation.
The military officer’s plea for divine intervention was prompted by the guiding principles of the chief of army staff, which emphasizes the importance of a highly motivated force that effectively carries out its constitutional duties.
