Former Osun State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, has lost his polling unit to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
Results announced at PU001, Coop. Building Junction, Isare, Ward 08, in Ilesa East Local Government Area, showed that APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji polled 256 votes to emerge winner of the polling unit where Aregbesola cast his vote earlier in the day.
Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party secured 43 votes to place second, while ADC candidate Najeem Salaam received 13 votes.
The outcome is an early boost for the APC and a disappointing result for the ADC in a polling unit linked to Aregbesola, who has been one of the party’s leading figures in Osun since leaving the APC last year.
Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior who governed Osun between 2010 and 2018, voted in his hometown of Ilesa on Saturday.
Across the state, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has continued the process of uploading polling unit results as collation progresses.
Residents across Osun’s 30 local government areas voted on Saturday to elect the governor who will oversee the affairs of the state for the next four years.
The contest is primarily between incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party, APC flag bearer Bola Oyebamiji and ADC candidate Najeem Salaam.
