A political strategist, Baba Yusuf, has said former Kano State Governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may have overestimated his political strength during reported talks with the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to NEWSFLASHER, Kwankwaso was said to have demanded control of 20 per cent of the APC’s national structure, the vice-presidential slot, and a guaranteed presidential ticket in 2031 as part of the negotiations.
Speaking on ARISE News on Friday, Yusuf described the alleged demands as excessive. He noted that Nigeria’s political landscape has shifted, with old-style “godfather” politics losing much of its influence.
Yusuf suggested that political signals so far indicate Kwankwaso may have pushed too hard in his dealings with the APC. However, he also stressed that the former governor deserves a chance to share his own version of events.
“I will agree with the second outcome you mentioned — that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso overreached,” Yusuf said. “But without prejudice to hearing his side of the story, Nigerian politics today is such that about 70 per cent of the wheeling and dealing now happens in the open.”
He added that Kwankwaso has already lost a key political ally — described as his son-in-law — to his longtime rival, former Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, and the APC.
Drawing comparisons with other political developments across the country, Yusuf said Kwankwaso’s situation is not unusual.
“We are seeing what is playing out in Rivers State. We saw what happened in Kano before. We also saw the rift involving Governor Obaseki and former Governor Nasir El-Rufai. These are lessons for political actors that sometimes, you have to play the long game,” he said.
