Tinubu Reveals: Britain’s Role in His Escape from Abacha’s Rule

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reflected on his time in exile during Nigeria’s military era, recounting how he found refuge in the United Kingdom while participating in the pro-democracy struggle.

Naija News reports that the President made the remarks on Wednesday during a state banquet at Windsor Castle, where he addressed members of the British royal family.

Tinubu said he remains grateful for the protection he received while facing threats from Nigeria’s military regime.

“Like many Nigerians involved in the pro-democracy struggle, I found safety here, and I recall that my residence was placed under Metropolitan Police surveillance for protection following threats from agents of the junta,” he said.

The President went into exile during the regime of Sani Abacha between 1993 and 1998.

His involvement in the pro-democracy movement followed the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as a turning point in Nigeria’s political history.

Tinubu described the period as a defining moment in his political journey.

Reflecting on his presence at the royal banquet, Tinubu said the experience underscored Nigeria’s democratic progress.

“That solidarity remains etched in our collective memory, and it is deeply humbling for me to stand before Your Majesty today as the President of a democratic Nigeria,” he added.

The President delivered the speech before King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine Princess of Wales as part of a diplomatic visit aimed at strengthening ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

He highlighted longstanding relations between both countries, citing shared democratic values, legal traditions, and institutional frameworks.

Tinubu also praised Nigerians living in the UK, particularly those working in the National Health Service (NHS), as well as individuals excelling in sports and other sectors.

He noted that their contributions continue to strengthen bilateral relations and project Nigeria positively on the global stage.
