Tobi Amusan Starts Quest for Historic Third Commonwealth Games Gold in Glasgow

Nigeria’s world record holder and reigning Commonwealth Games champion, Tobi Amusan, will begin her quest for a historic third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles on Thursday at the 2026 Games in Glasgow.

Amusan, who has dominated the event at the last two editions of the Games, has been drawn in the first of two heats alongside Ghana’s Evonne Britton, Canada’s Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill and other competitors.

The second heat will feature other top contenders, including the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton and Jamaica’s Megan Simmonds, setting up an exciting contest ahead of the final later in the day.

The heats are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., with the final set for 9:49 p.m. at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow.

The 29-year-old heads into the competition as the overwhelming favourite after recording the fastest season’s best in the field at 12.28 seconds.

Amusan arrives in Glasgow in impressive form, having finished second at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon—the same venue where she set the women’s 100m hurdles world record of 12.12 seconds in 2022.

This season, she has matched her 12.28-second season’s best on three occasions and secured two Diamond League victories in Paris and Rabat, reinforcing her status as one of the world’s leading hurdlers.

The Nigerian star won her first Commonwealth Games gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games in Australia, clocking 12.68 seconds to become the first Nigerian woman to win the event. She successfully defended her title four years later in Birmingham with a Games record of 12.30 seconds.

A victory in Glasgow would see Amusan become the first athlete to win three consecutive Commonwealth Games titles in the women’s 100m hurdles while also giving her the opportunity to lower her own Games record.
