Umahi’s Son Shocks Ebonyi as He Wins Council Chairmanship

Osborn Nweze Umahi, the 28-year-old son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, has emerged as the Chairman of Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Naija News understands that Umahi contested the council election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and secured victory after a campaign that focused largely on grassroots development, economic growth and better administration.

Shortly after he was declared the winner, the younger Umahi announced that he would forgo his official salary and allowances throughout his tenure as council chairman.

He said the decision was intended to ensure that more of the local government’s resources were channelled into projects and programmes that would directly benefit residents rather than personal remuneration.

The new council chairman pledged to make infrastructure development, youth empowerment and job creation central to his administration.

He also promised to improve economic opportunities and strengthen the delivery of basic services across Ohaozara.

Umahi had repeatedly emphasised grassroots development during the campaign, arguing that local governments should play a more effective role in addressing the everyday challenges confronting residents.

At 28, Umahi presented himself during the campaign as part of a younger generation seeking to bring a different approach to public administration.

He promised to apply private-sector principles, including efficiency, innovation, and accountability, to running the council.

The new chairman also stressed the need to strengthen governance at the grassroots level, particularly by creating opportunities for young people and improving residents’ economic and social conditions.
