Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in new Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus’ first squad, ending speculation over the 41-year-old forward’s immediate international future.
Ronaldo’s place in the squad comes after uncertainty surrounding his continued involvement with the Portugal national team following their World Cup round-of-16 defeat by eventual champions Spain in July.
The Al-Nassr star was visibly emotional after the defeat and admitted that he needed time to decide what would come next for his international career.
“I will meet the family and take decisions with a calm head,” Ronaldo said after the match.
However, Jorge Jesus has now included Ronaldo in his 25-man squad for Portugal’s four Nations League fixtures scheduled between 24 September and 4 October.
Jesus, 72, took over as Portugal head coach following Roberto Martinez’s departure after the World Cup. The veteran manager is also familiar with Ronaldo, having previously coached the forward at Al-Nassr last season.
Ronaldo had already announced before the tournament that the 2026 World Cup would be his final World Cup appearance. His inclusion in Jesus’ first Portugal squad, however, indicates that he remains available for international duty beyond the tournament.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will turn 42 before next summer’s Nations League finals and would be 43 by the time Euro 2028 arrives, making his continued involvement with Portugal a notable development as the team looks toward its next generation.
Ronaldo Included Alongside Manchester United and Premier League Stars
Ronaldo is joined in the squad by several prominent players, including Manchester United duo Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Dalot.
Manchester City defender Ruben Dias and Chelsea forward Pedro Neto are also included as Portugal prepare for their upcoming Nations League campaign.

- 24 September: Portugal vs Wales — 19:45 BST
- 27 September: Norway vs Portugal

Ronaldo’s selection ensures that the veteran captain remains part of Portugal’s plans for now, despite questions over how much longer he will continue his international career.
His presence will also give Jorge Jesus the opportunity to work with one of the most experienced players in world football as Portugal begin a new chapter under their new head coach.
