BREAKING: Carrick Responds When Asked If He Expected To Still Be Man United Head Coach For Chelsea Clash

According to a report by Metro on Thursday October 29, 2026, Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has insisted he was not surprised to remain in charge ahead of Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Carrick is under increasing pressure following United’s disappointing run of results, which has left the club 16th in the Premier League table, just one point above the relegation zone.

The Red Devils suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday, following a heavy 4-1 loss to Como in the Champions League. They have now gone eight matches without a win in all competitions.

Despite reports suggesting that United’s hierarchy had considered replacing him, Carrick said his focus remained on improving the team rather than worrying about his future.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Thursday, he was asked whether he was surprised to still be in charge for the Chelsea encounter.

“No. I’m here to do my job, you know. I’m here to do the best for the team, and I’m desperate to make us better and improve things. So, I’m not surprised, no,” Carrick said.

He added that he had not expected any particular decision regarding his position after the defeat to Bournemouth.

“I said it after the game, I didn’t expect anything [job wise]. I was literally dealing with the performance, the result, what it was,” he stated.

Carrick also revealed that he had not sought assurances from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada or director of football Jason Wilcox about his future at the club.

Meanwhile, the United manager confirmed that captain Bruno Fernandes would return to the starting lineup and retain the armband against Chelsea.

The report also indicates that Manchester United have explored possible replacements, with former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and ex-Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann among the names considered. Antonio Conte and Unai Emery have also been linked with the position.

United will travel to Stamford Bridge hoping to end their winless run, with the result potentially having significant consequences for Carrick’s future at Old Trafford.
