Factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have resolved to wait for the January 23 ruling of the Court of Appeal before deciding their next steps in the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.
The dispute over who controls Nigeria’s main opposition party has now moved to the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal, following multiple appeals filed by parties involved in the conflict.
When the case was heard on Wednesday, counsel to the Kabiru Turaki-led faction, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), told the court that the appeal had been properly entered. He also informed the panel of a motion seeking an order to halt further proceedings at the Federal High Court until the appeal is determined.
In response, the Turaki-led faction urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to suspend all actions on the matter pending the appellate court’s ruling.
Speaking to ThisDay, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the factional National Secretary of the PDP aligned with the Abdullahi Mohammed-led group and loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said his camp would wait for the January 23 decision before taking any action.
“Let us wait for what the Court of Appeal will say on the motion over the crisis. After January 23, I will speak on the next line of action,” Anyanwu said.
“We are aware that elections are approaching, and our supporters are eager to know the direction of the party.”
Similarly, Sani Umar, former media aide to ex-Vice President Namadi Sambo and current media aide to the PDP national chairman, said the Turaki-led faction would also await the court’s verdict.
“The Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led PDP will wait for the Court of Appeal to decide before determining the next line of action,” Umar said, expressing confidence that the ruling would favour his faction.
As the 2027 general elections draw closer, anxiety is growing among PDP members with political ambitions, many of whom are worried about their future amid the unresolved leadership crisis.
The uncertainty has been worsened by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has stated that it is yet to recognise the Turaki-led faction due to conflicting court orders.
At present, the rival factions operate from different locations in Abuja. The Turaki-led group runs its affairs from Area 10, Garki, while the faction loyal to Wike operates from Wuye. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Force continues to seal the party’s official national secretariat on Michael Okpara Street, Wuse.
Sources told ThisDay that the prolonged crisis has pushed some PDP stakeholders to consider mass defection to the Accord Party or the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where several prominent PDP figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Senate President David Mark, have reportedly moved.
With political activities expected to begin by early April 2026 and party primaries scheduled shortly after, pressure continues to mount within the PDP.
Reacting to the situation, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, said the party remains open to new entrants.
“We are open to all Nigerians. We cannot shut our doors to anyone, including those from the PDP,” he said.
