Several APC supporters have been injured after two buses conveying them from Benue State to the party’s North-Central mega rally in Lafia, Nasarawa State, were involved in a road accident. No deaths were reported.
The accident occurred on Saturday morning near the Government House Junction in Lafia, as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) travelled to attend the political rally in support of President Bola Tinubu’s second-term ambition.
Politics Nigeria reports that the buses were conveying supporters loyal to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, from Benue State to the rally venue.
An eyewitness said the incident happened within Lafia town, close to the Government House Junction.
Dan-Morgan Ihomun, spokesperson for Akume’s APC camp in Benue State, confirmed the accident during a telephone conversation, stating that some of the passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.
He, however, confirmed that no life was lost in the incident.
“Yes, two vehicles conveying supporters of our party APC on their way to the venue of North Central mega rally today in Lafia involved in accident. Some were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. Nobody died and we thank God for that,” Ihomun said.
APC Supporters Converge on Lafia for North-Central Mega Rally
The accident occurred as APC supporters from across the North-Central region gathered in Lafia for a mega rally organised to demonstrate support for President Tinubu’s anticipated second-term bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party members and supporters had started arriving in the Nasarawa State capital on Friday in preparation for Saturday’s event.
Several buses conveying the contingents displayed images of Tinubu, Vice-President Kashim Shettima and governors from states across the region. Chartered interstate buses were also deployed to transport supporters to the rally venue.
The rally was hosted by Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule and was expected to feature First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu as its headline guest.
The gathering forms part of the ruling party’s political mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections, as party leaders and supporters seek to consolidate backing for Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
Doguwa Urges Northerners to Support Tinubu’s Re-Election
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Downtown Stream and Leader of the Northern Caucus in the Green Chamber, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, has urged Northerners to support Tinubu’s re-election bid and other APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.
Doguwa described supporting the President’s second-term ambition as a moral political obligation for the people of Northern Nigeria.
“Working for President Tinubu’s re-election is a moral political obligation on the people of Northern Nigeria,” he said.
The lawmaker called on Northerners to unite behind Tinubu, arguing that their support would help sustain peaceful coexistence across the country.
“We must rise individually and collectively to unconditionally vote for Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term for the continuous peaceful coexistence of our great country, Nigeria,” Doguwa said.
He made the remarks on Saturday when APC members, area supervisors and council advisers from his Doguwa constituency paid him a courtesy visit at his residence in Kaduna State.
According to the lawmaker, the visit was part of strategic preparations for the forthcoming general elections in his Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency.
Doguwa Expresses Confidence in APC’s Northern Support
Doguwa expressed confidence that Tinubu would secure substantial support from Northern Nigeria during the next presidential election, describing votes from the region as critical to the President’s re-election prospects.
He also argued that the solidarity he receives from party members and supporters demonstrates the North’s continued commitment to Tinubu and other APC candidates.
The lawmaker maintained that the ruling party continues to enjoy support in the region despite what he described as propaganda against the APC.
The accident involving the two buses added a worrying development to the movement of supporters travelling to Lafia for the political gathering. However, the confirmation that no lives were lost provided some relief as the APC held its North-Central mega rally in Nasarawa State.
