Tension reportedly erupted at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu on Saturday after suspected thugs allegedly attacked members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) who had gathered to welcome the party’s governorship candidate.
The incident reportedly caused panic among party members, with footage circulating on social media showing some of them running for safety while alleging that they were being shot at and tear-gassed.
In the video shared on X, some NDC members accused security operatives of being present during the incident, raising concerns over the safety of political supporters at the airport.
“They are shooting tear gas at us. This is under the watch of the police and army. We’re running for our lives. We’re at the Enugu International Airport here,” one of the party members was heard saying in the footage.
The agitated supporters were also heard chanting slogans against the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu as they fled the scene.
“The All Progressives Congress, APC, must go. Tinubu must go,” they chanted.
As of the time of filing this report, the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack, including the identities of those involved and the immediate cause of the incident, remained unclear.
There was also no confirmation in the available account of any arrests, injuries or official response from the police, military authorities or airport management.
NDC Previously Alleged Attack on Members in Enugu
The reported airport incident comes less than a month after the NDC alleged that its members were attacked during a grassroots meeting in Obuoffia Ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
In a report published on September 14, 2026, the party accused suspected state-sponsored thugs of attacking its members during the meeting.
The latest allegation has renewed concerns over the safety of political party members and supporters in the state, particularly as political activities continue.
However, the allegations surrounding both incidents require independent verification, and no conclusion can be drawn about responsibility without further evidence or official findings.
Further details are expected as more information emerges about the reported incident at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport.
