Dangote Refinery IPO: Billionaire to Prioritise Investors with ₦50,000 or Less

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has reaffirmed his commitment to prioritising small-scale investors in the planned initial public offering (IPO) of the $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery, saying the initiative is designed to give ordinary Africans an opportunity to own shares in the business.

Dangote made the disclosure during the nationwide IPO roadshow in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he addressed investors, financial market experts, business leaders and other stakeholders.

According to a Wednesday statement by the Dangote Group, the billionaire said investors looking to commit ₦50,000 or less would receive priority as the company seeks to expand public ownership of the refinery.

“We will prioritise people with 50,000 and below,” Dangote stated.

The announcement reinforces his position that the refinery’s public offering is intended to extend investment opportunities beyond wealthy individuals and institutional investors to ordinary Nigerians.

Dangote Urges Nigerians to Invest in Refinery

During the roadshow, Dangote disclosed that investors from different parts of the world had already committed significant capital to the refinery.

However, he said the IPO would provide Nigerians with an opportunity to acquire direct ownership in the facility and participate in its long-term economic benefits.

“African investors have invested in this refinery. Now it is time for Nigerians to invest in themselves and participate in a project that is creating value, jobs, and opportunities for generations to come,” Dangote stated.

The Nigerian billionaire also encouraged prospective shareholders to approach the offering with a long-term investment outlook, highlighting its potential to help investors build wealth and diversify their portfolios.

The emphasis on smaller investments could broaden participation in the offering, particularly among retail investors seeking exposure to one of Nigeria’s largest industrial projects.

Dangote Refinery IPO: Minimum Investment and Share Price

The Dangote Refinery IPO comprises 4.1 billion new ordinary shares offered at ₦525 per share.

The minimum subscription requirement is 10 shares, equivalent to ₦5,250, making the offering accessible to investors who cannot commit large amounts of capital.

If fully subscribed, the share issuance is expected to raise approximately ₦2.15 trillion.

The IPO was launched on September 14, with the closing date initially set for October 13. The deadline has since been extended to October 27, giving prospective investors additional time to participate.

The offering is part of a broader effort to expand ownership of the refinery, which has a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day, by attracting as many as 10 million retail investors in Nigeria and other African countries.

Dangote’s latest comments suggest that the company intends to encourage broad participation, although the precise allocation mechanism for investors committing ₦50,000 or less was not detailed in the announcement.

Dangote Refinery Reports $4.7 Billion Profit

The IPO comes amid a significant improvement in the refinery’s reported financial performance.

The facility recorded net income of $4.725 billion for the nine months ended September 30, 2026, according to the figures cited in the report.

Revenue more than doubled to $22.5 billion during the period, while the refinery processed as much as 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day.

The company also reported cash holdings of $650.8 million, compared with debt of $1.7 billion a year earlier.

The improved financial performance provides important context for the planned share offering, which is expected to raise substantial capital and broaden the refinery’s ownership base.

However, prospective investors should assess the company’s financial statements, valuation, risks and applicable offer documents before making investment decisions. Reported profitability does not guarantee future returns or dividend payments.

Dangote Refinery IPO Targets Investors Across Africa

The public offering is designed to attract investors beyond Nigeria, with the company seeking to give individuals across Africa an opportunity to participate in the refinery’s ownership.

The $20 billion facility is one of the continent’s most significant industrial investments and has a nameplate processing capacity of 700,000 barrels per day.

By targeting up to 10 million retail investors, the company aims to expand share ownership beyond established institutional and international investors.

The proposed ₦2.15 trillion fundraising, if fully subscribed, would make the offering a major milestone for Nigeria’s capital market and could rank among the largest equity offerings in African history.

For Nigerian investors, the combination of a ₦5,250 minimum subscription and Dangote’s stated priority for investors committing ₦50,000 or less places small-scale participation at the centre of the IPO’s public messaging.

With the subscription deadline extended to October 27, attention will turn to investor participation, the final subscription outcome and the allocation of shares once the offering closes.
