The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the fugitive son of former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team, Abdulrasheed Maina, and handed him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Security sources disclosed that Faisal, who had been on the run since 2020, was apprehended by DSS operatives in the Karsana area of Abuja following an intelligence-led operation.
According to a security source, his arrest followed credible intelligence indicating that he had secretly returned to Nigeria.
“His arrest followed credible intelligence which indicated that Faisal had secretly returned to the country,” the source said.
Why Faisal Maina Was Wanted
Faisal was prosecuted by the EFCC on a three-count charge bordering on money laundering and conspiracy. However, he reportedly violated his bail conditions and fled the country before the conclusion of his trial.
The proceedings continued in his absence, leading to his conviction in 2021 by Justice Okon Abang, who sentenced him to 14 years in prison.
Following the conviction, the court ordered that Faisal be arrested wherever he was found within Nigeria and remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence.
The court also directed the Federal Government to take lawful steps to secure his extradition if he was located outside the country.
DSS Hands Faisal Maina Over to EFCC
Faisal’s transfer to the EFCC is expected to facilitate the enforcement of the court’s judgment and the implementation of his prison sentence in accordance with the law.
A security source said the handover would enable the relevant authorities to take the necessary steps following his arrest.
The development marks a significant step in the effort to enforce the conviction against Faisal, who had remained at large since reportedly fleeing the country in 2020.
Further details concerning the EFCC’s next steps following the handover were not provided in the account of the arrest.
The case underscores the role of law enforcement agencies in pursuing fugitives and enforcing court orders in financial crime prosecutions.
