Iyabo Obasanjo Reacts to Alleged Alliance With Peter Obi, Declares Support for Tinubu

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ogun Central, Iyabo Obasanjo, has denied reports that she is considering an alliance with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obasanjo dismissed the report as false in a statement issued by Peter Macjob, spokesperson for the Iyabo Obasanjo Senatorial Campaign Organisation.

She maintained that she had never met Obi for political discussions, dismissing claims that she was negotiating or considering an arrangement involving the former Anambra State governor.

“I have never met Obi for any political discussions ever,” she said.

The clarification followed a social media publication attributed to a blog identified as Very Nigerian, which claimed that a so-called Rainbow Coalition was emerging in Ogun Central, with Obasanjo allegedly considering an endorsement of Obi.

However, the former senator reaffirmed her support for President Bola Tinubu, citing her longstanding political relationship with the President as a key reason for her position.

According to her, Tinubu is the presidential candidate she knows best among those in contention, adding that he has consistently treated her with respect.

“I am supporting Tinubu because I know him best of all the presidential candidates as a much senior politician, and he has always treated me with respect,” she said.

Obasanjo described the report linking her to an alliance with Obi as fabricated, alleging that it was intended to mislead voters and create confusion within the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Iyabo Obasanjo Senatorial Campaign Organisation also denied that any meetings, consultations or agreements had taken place between Obasanjo and Obi regarding a proposed cross-party voting arrangement.

The organisation maintained that Obasanjo remained the PDP’s duly cleared senatorial candidate for Ogun Central and was focused on her ambition to represent the district in the Senate.

Her clarification comes amid political discussions and reported realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political parties and aspirants position themselves for the next electoral contest.
