The much expected defection of Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been postponed.
Reports indicate the initial date of Monday, January 5, 2026 for the formal move has been shifted to Monday, January 12, 2026.
Sources close to the governor revealed he requested the extension during a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima in Abuja to allow more time for consultations with some state legislators and key political stakeholders who have not yet fully committed to the transition.
The postponement comes amid significant debate within Kano’s political landscape.
The proposed defection has ignited tensions within the NNPP, with its leadership, including Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, arguing the move amounts to a betrayal of the party’s mandate and urging Yusuf to remain.
The development also reflects broader political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with realignments from both the NNPP and APC likely to shape future electoral strategies.
