The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a suspect in connection with the murder of a 61-year-old retired teacher, Adedotun Adeteju Oluwaseun, popularly known as Mama Teacher, eight months after she was found dead inside the toilet of her residence in Abeokuta.
The suspect, identified as Saburi Lateef Ayinde, popularly known as Oki-Ocean, was arrested on October 19 following sustained investigations into the killing.
The victim was allegedly murdered at her residence in Agbaakin Emere, Bode-Olude, Abeokuta, on Friday, February 27, 2026, a day after returning from a retirement celebration organised by her colleagues.
Her lifeless body was discovered inside her toilet on February 28.
Following preliminary investigations, the case was transferred from the Bode-Olude Police Division to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, where detectives continued efforts to identify and apprehend the alleged killer.
Suspect Confesses to Killing Retired Teacher Over Money Dispute
In a confessional video obtained by DAILY POST, Ayinde allegedly admitted killing the retired teacher following a disagreement over money.
According to the suspect, he had entrusted ₦3.45 million to the deceased for safekeeping. He claimed that she had also promised to lend him an additional ₦1.55 million to enable him to purchase a vehicle.
Ayinde said he visited the victim’s residence at about 6 p.m. on February 27 to demand the money.
He explained that he had repeatedly asked her about the funds but claimed she continued to delay him.
According to his account, an argument broke out when he demanded the return of his ₦3.45 million after she allegedly failed to provide the additional money.
The suspect said the disagreement escalated when the retired teacher threatened to shout at him and ordered him to leave her apartment.
He further claimed that the victim went into the toilet, where he followed her while demanding his money.
Ayinde allegedly confessed that he picked up a cutlass he saw on the ground and attacked the woman as she attempted to come out of the toilet.
He said he struck her on the neck, hand and legs before she fell. He also admitted moving her body onto the toilet seat.
The suspect further claimed that he remained at the residence because a neighbour was outside and he did not want to be seen.
According to his confession, the victim was still attempting to speak after the attack. He said he later sat in the parlour and regretted his actions.
Ayinde also admitted taking the deceased’s mobile phone after discovering that it was not protected by a password.
How Stolen Phone Led Police to Suspect
The Ogun State Police Command said the stolen mobile phone played a crucial role in the investigation and helped detectives establish a connection to the suspect.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi B. Babaseyi, disclosed that tracking the phone provided investigators with information that led to Ayinde’s arrest.
According to Babaseyi, detectives were able to establish relevant facts and connect the suspect to the case through the phone-tracking process.
He added that the suspect would soon be charged in court once the remaining facts of the investigation had been established.
The police spokesperson also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, CP Bode Ojajuni, commended the investigating officers for their persistence and professionalism in handling the case.
Ogun Police Warn Residents Against Taking Laws Into Their Hands
Following the arrest, the police urged residents of Ogun State to remain security-conscious and exercise caution when deciding whom to trust or confide in.
The Command also warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing the importance of resolving disputes through lawful means.
Babaseyi advised residents to exercise patience and avoid acting in anger, noting that impulsive decisions could lead to serious and regrettable consequences.
The arrest comes eight months after the death of the retired teacher, whose body was discovered at her Abeokuta residence shortly after she celebrated her retirement with colleagues.
The suspect is expected to face prosecution after the police conclude the necessary investigative procedures.
