Police Arrest Suspected Armed Robber in Delta, Recover AK-47, Two Locally Made Guns

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a 26-year-old suspected armed robber, identified as Sunday Nimel, in Asaba, the state capital, recovering an AK-47 rifle, two locally made guns and ammunition during an intelligence-led operation.

The arrest was carried out on October 7, 2026, by operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), Ughelli, in collaboration with local vigilantes following credible intelligence.

According to a statement released on Saturday by the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, the suspect is allegedly linked to a robbery syndicate responsible for several residential armed robbery operations in Asaba and its surrounding communities.

The police said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks and improve security across Delta State.

Police Recover AK-47 Rifle, Ammunition in Asaba

In the statement, the police disclosed that the suspect made useful statements during interrogation, leading operatives to a hideout near Okpanam City Gate.

A search of the location reportedly led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle, three rounds of live ammunition and two locally made cut-to-size guns.

The police said the recovered weapons and ammunition would form part of the ongoing investigation into the suspect’s alleged involvement in armed robbery activities.

“The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old suspected armed robber in Asaba and recovered three firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-led operation,” the statement said.

The command added that investigations were ongoing to establish the full extent of the suspect’s alleged criminal activities and determine whether other members of the suspected robbery syndicate were involved.

Delta Police Commissioner Commends Operatives

Meanwhile, the Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, commended the operatives involved in the operation for what the command described as a successful arrest.

The police commissioner reiterated the command’s commitment to intelligence-led policing and efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating across the state.

Erale also urged residents to support security agencies by providing credible and timely information that could help prevent crime and facilitate the arrest of criminal suspects.

He assured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property throughout Delta State.

The police have yet to announce further arrests in connection with the case, while investigations into the suspect’s alleged activities continue.
