AAU Lecturer Dies in Ekpoma Hotel After Reported Sexual Encounter

A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died after reportedly collapsing in a hotel room following a sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to reports, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman and later sent her out to purchase water. When she returned, she reportedly found the lecturer lying dead inside the room.

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the incident on Wednesday, saying three people had been arrested in connection with the lecturer’s death.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the police received a report on October 5, 2026, at about 8pm concerning the death of the Ambrose Alli University lecturer.

She said the deceased had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman before he was later found dead in the room.

Ikoedem disclosed that the hotel owner, manager and the sex worker were taken into custody as police continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

She added that Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of Ambrose Alli University, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution.

However, he stressed that the incident happened outside the university campus and was unrelated to the institution’s operations.

Aladenika said the woman involved was not an AAU student, describing the circumstances surrounding the incident as part of the deceased’s private life.

The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death and determine whether any further action is required.
