Lagos Crushes 1,500 ‘Okada’ Bikes, Enforces Ban in Multiple Areas

To uphold the ban on motorcycle operations, the Lagos State government destroyed 1,500 impounded motorcycles known as ‘okada’ across ten local councils and 15 Local Council Development Areas.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, affirmed the government’s commitment to safety and security, emphasizing the necessity of restricting motorcycles in specified regions. The banned areas include Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, Somolu, Mushin, Apapa, Ikeja, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Surulere, and Eti-Osa, along with associated local council development areas.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps revealed a weekly court prosecution of approximately 40 environmental offenders. Corps Marshal Gbemisola Akinpelu expressed concerns about challenges faced during operations, citing attacks on officers by members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

Akinpelu stressed the crucial role of environmental sanitation in the community and called for collective efforts to maintain a cleaner and healthier Lagos. Despite having an ample number of officers for enforcement, she urged public cooperation to tackle issues like roadside defecation and illegal street vending.
