Northern CAN Disowns Dogara, Babachir’s Meeting Over Muslim-Muslim Presidency Ticket

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), yesterday, distanced itself from a meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday by former House of Representatives Speaker, Yakubu Dogara; former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Lawal Babachir and some regional CAN chairmen over the controversial Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We take exception to that,” CAN stated. We will never be a part of it because we are not a part of it. We have channels for speaking whenever we want to.

Speaking to press yesterday about the meeting in Abuja, Elder Sunday Oibe, Secretary General of Northern CAN, said none of the association’s officials had been contacted or invited.

It is untrue that the CAN leadership in the northern states convened in Abuja to adopt a position on the Muslim-Muslim ticket, he declared.

One of the Christian organizations that had spoke out against the Muslim-Muslim ticket was Northern CAN. Our stance had been chosen. We avoid thinking about the past.

“It is an attempt to split the church, and it will not succeed, for certain persons to congregate in Abuja and claim that the CAN chairman from the 19 northern states convened.

“The few chairmen who showed up said that a non-governmental organization had invited them to a meeting. As you can see, the former Speaker and SGF summoned the meeting.

Why do they need to invite church officials to their meeting? Political parties are not what CAN is. Members of our organization come from all political parties. They didn’t invite the Northern CAN leaders to meetings when it was advantageous for them. Why are CAN leaders being invited to their meetings?

The attendees of the meeting were surprised because it was different from what they had expected. Regrettably, some specific individuals were being employed to contact the CAN leadership in the Northern states.

We want to take advantage of this opportunity to let everyone know that Northern CAN is led by Rev. Yakubu Pam, who serves as chairman. Rev. Fr. Dodo serves as vice chairman, and I serve as secretary, among other positions. There is a formal line of communication.

“It is unacceptable for anyone to use the name of Northern CAN to further their political goal.

Politicians should be aware that certain people view the current political climate as a chance to make money and will go to any lengths to extort money from elected officials.

“Northern CAN will never hang out with a politician. Every politician who feels the need to consult with us or work with us is welcome to come through our doors. However, as our association is not a political party, we will never visit a politician.
