Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has explained why he decided to return to the classroom at the age of 77, revealing that his desire to deepen his knowledge of Christian Theology and strengthen his relationship with God motivated the decision.
Naija News reports that the former president shared the reason behind his pursuit of further education during an interview with Nigerian comedian and content creator Isbae U.
According to Obasanjo, his decision to return to school was driven by his belief that learning should not be limited by age. He also wanted to gain a deeper understanding of God and improve the way he worships Him.
The former Nigerian leader enrolled at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), where he pursued further studies in Christian Theology.
Obasanjo first obtained a postgraduate diploma in Christian Theology from the institution in 2009. Five years later, in 2014, he returned to pursue a master’s degree in the same field.
Reflecting on his decision to continue his education at an advanced age, Obasanjo said his experience was intended to serve as an example that people can continue learning regardless of how old they are.
He explained that his interest in Christian Theology went beyond the pursuit of an additional academic qualification. Instead, he wanted to develop a better understanding of God and strengthen his faith.
Speaking during the interview, the former president said:
“I went back to school at 77 years old to study Christian Theology, to show by example that there’s no age limit to education. I also wanted to learn more about God so I could worship Him better, and I enjoyed it.”
Obasanjo’s account highlights his commitment to lifelong learning and his interest in deepening his spiritual knowledge. His decision to return to the classroom at an advanced age also underscores the importance of continuing education at every stage of life.
