The National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Yunusa Tanko, has said the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, voluntarily made available records of his administration during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State.
Tanko made the statement on Friday during an interview with ARISE Television while responding to questions surrounding claims that Obi left behind loans, unpaid salaries, external obligations and other financial liabilities for his successor, former Governor Willie Obiano.
The controversy has resurfaced following allegations concerning the financial position of Anambra State at the end of Obi’s administration and whether outstanding debts and commitments were transferred to the succeeding government.
Defending Obi, Tanko said the former Anambra governor had nothing to hide regarding the state’s financial records and was willing to address questions about his administration’s finances.
According to Tanko, Obi had already made his handover records available to the public and presented the documents voluntarily rather than being compelled to do so.
“Nobody asked His Excellency, Mr Peter Obi, to present facts about his handing over. He did willingly and openly to the people.”
Tanko also challenged those disputing the figures contained in Obi’s handover documents to verify the records through the relevant banking institutions instead of relying solely on allegations.
He maintained that evidence relating to the funds reportedly available at the time of the handover could be verified through bank records.
“The video is there. Anybody can see it. They confirmed that such amount of money is in their bank account. If anybody wants to contradict that, let them go to the bank. It is available.”
The comments come amid continued debate over the financial records and liabilities associated with Obi’s administration in Anambra State, with different claims being made about debts, obligations and funds reportedly handed over to the succeeding administration.
The issue has remained a subject of political discussion, particularly as Obi continues his political activities under the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
