Celebrations erupted among opposition supporters in Dakar as local media reported preliminary results favouring Faye, who enjoys the backing of prominent opposition leader Ousmane Sonko. At 44 years old, Faye appears to be comfortably ahead of his main contender, Amadou Ba, based on tallies from polling stations.
Despite defeat, several other opposition candidates have acknowledged Faye’s lead. Official results are slated to be disclosed by the Dakar appeals court later this week.
The delayed election, marked by significant political unrest in recent years, holds promise for stability and economic rejuvenation in Senegal. Outgoing President Macky Sall’s chosen successor, Amadou Ba, faces an uphill battle amid public dissatisfaction over economic challenges and protests during Sall’s tenure.
