Soludo Was Right, Peter Obi Stunted Democracy In Anambra – Activist

AWKA – The Coordinator, Movement for the Conduct of Local Government Elections in Anambra state and Coordinator Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi says the Governor of Anambra state, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo was right in all his reservations about the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.

Obi who spoke with our correspondent in Awka, recalled that the Labour Party presidential candidate, who was a former governor in Anambra, stunted democracy during his regime by not conducting local government elections thereby denying him and other citizens their political rights of becoming elected local government chairmen and councilors; instead he recruited Transition Committee Chairmen whom he said became his stooges for 8 years.

Obi said, ” I was arrested October 1, 2008 by Peter Obi because I asked him to conduct local government elections. Eta Ekpeyong who was the Director DSS in Anambra then, arrested me on October 1, 2008 on the instruction of Peter Obi because I was demanding for the conduct of local government elections in Anambra state.

I was arrested and kept at the DSS headquarters Awka from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. That incident is in the front page of most Nigerian newspapers. I still have the newspapers till date. I say it without equivocation that Peter Obi is not a democrat.”

The renowned activist who stated categorically and without mincing words that he supported Governor Soludo, maintained that the said investments ex-governor Peter Obi claimed to have instituted in Anambra were worthless and utopian. He accused the Labour Party presidential candidate of having appropriated monies meant for Awka-South and other local governments for close to 8 years and equally denied him political participation when he was governor.

Obi said Soludo was right in his opinion about Peter Obi and would not tolerate anybody going to the social media to malign him, stressing that Soludo remained the finest of the Igbo nation today. He said he does not work for Soludo and that Soludo does not know him, but the truth of the matter was that Soludo was right in his reservations about Peter Obi.

The social crusader said Soludo promised Ndi-Anambra that he would conduct local government elections in 2 years and that the governor is only few months old in office; that the Movement for the Conduct of Local Government Elections in Anambra state, will him write him a letter soon to remind him of his pledge to Anambra citizens.

He said it was too early to judge Governor Soludo because Peter Obi stayed in office and allegedly appropriated local government funds for more than 7 years without giving room for democratically elected council chairmen.

He therefore advised that the the feud between Soludo and Peter Obi should seize while Peter Obi should call his supporters to order telling them to desist from insulting Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo on social media platforms. That Soludo made a statement about Peter Obi and the statement is correct.

Obi said, ” Election was conducted for Peter Obi and he became governor in Anambra state. The same man refused to conduct local government election for those who wanted to display their potentials at the local government and ward levels but he stunted democracy. He stunted my political growth and those of other people in Anambra state.

I aspired to be local government chairman but Peter Obi denied me political participation for more than 7 years. I was the pioneer Secretary of Labour Party in Anambra. Labour Party is just a dumping ground for people who did not secure their party tickets. Let’s see what happens after the election, whether Peter Obi will remain in Labour Party and grow the party.”

Osita Obi further disclosed that from his standpoints, the APC presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu has better democratic credentials than Peter Obi. He said Tinubu created many local government departments and advanced democracy when he was governor of Lagos State. That Peter Obi didn’t create any instead he stunted democracy at the grassroots.

According to him, Vice President Yemi Osibanjo is from Osun state but Tinubu brought him to Lagos State and made him Attorney General; that Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola is from Osun state but Tinubu made him Commissioner for Works in Lagos State and after serving, he supported him to become governor.

He said Tinubu supported Osibanjo to become Vice President; that he supported Babatunde Raji Fashola and he became governor of Lagos State. That Tinubu also supported Faleke who is from Kogi state but now representing a constituency in Lagos State in the House of Representatives and many others he empowered politically.

The renowned activist stated that if Tinubu and Atiku were accused of corruption, then Peter Obi too should be accused of corruption because according to him the former governor invested Anambra money in a company he has vested personal interest. That interms of democratic credentials, Peter Obi can not be compared to Tinubu because he believes Tinubu has more democratic qualifications than the labour party presidential candidate.

Obi also told our correspondent during the interview that, if the presidential elections were conducted, Atiku and Tinubu will win Peter Obi landslide, that he can only vote Peter Obi on grounds of ethnic bias not on democratic competence, adding that his two choices for the presidency is either Bola Ahmed Tinubu or Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar.
