Supreme Court Denies Nnamdi Kanu Bail Over Terrorism Charges

The Supreme Court has declined to mandate the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the embattled leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The court, led by Justice Garba Lawal and Justice Emmanuel Agim, overturned the Court of Appeal’s earlier decision to release Kanu on bail and dismiss terrorism charges against him. The Supreme Court asserted that the Nigerian Government’s controversial extradition of Kanu from Kenya did not strip any court of its authority to proceed with the trial.

Justice Lawal emphasized the absence of cited Nigerian law in the case, suggesting that Kanu’s recourse for the alleged unlawful abduction lies in filing a civil matter rather than obstructing the criminal trial.

Consequently, the apex court directed Kanu to defend himself against the remaining seven-count terrorism charges before the Federal High Court in Abuja.
