Troops Dismantle Illegal Refinery, Crackdown on Oil Theft, and Extremist Activities in the Niger Delta

Troops of Operation DELTA SAFE have intensified efforts to curb the menace of crude oil theft and dismantle illegal activities perpetrated by violent extremists in the Niger Delta region. In a recent series of successful operations, the troops have made significant strides in disrupting illegal operations and apprehending suspects.

According to a press release from Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, Abuja, troops conducted raids on illegal refining sites, resulting in the destruction of several facilities. Alongside this, they recovered substantial amounts of stolen crude oil and illegally refined petroleum products.

Additionally, troops raided suspected violent extremists’ hideouts, leading to the apprehension of numerous suspects and the neutralization of threats. In Ini LGA of Akwa Ibom State, troops recovered a total of 944,700 litres of stolen crude oil, 171,060 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 1,500 litres of DPK. Furthermore, they discovered and destroyed 102 dugout pits, 41 boats, and 36 storage tanks used for illegal activities.

“The operations also yielded the confiscation of various equipment and materials used in the illicit refining process, including cooking ovens, pumping machines, vehicles, and storage facilities,” said Major General Edward Buba.

“One notable raid occurred on 18 March 2024, in which troops targeted a violent extremists’ and gunrunner hideout in Ini LGA of Akwa Ibom State. The operation was initiated based on reports from the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms/Light Weapons regarding suspicious activities. As a result, a suspect identified as Umoh Ekpeyak was apprehended,” he continued.

Additionally, troops conducted search and rescue operations in Ughelli South and Burutu LGAs of Delta State, leading to the arrest of five violent extremists and the recovery of weapons and ammunition.

“Similar operations in Eleme LGA of Rivers State resulted in the apprehension of suspects involved in criminal activities, including oil theft and violent extremism,” Major General Edward Buba added.

“Operation DELTA SAFE remains committed to maintaining peace and security in the Niger Delta region by dismantling criminal networks and curbing illicit activities. The efforts of the troops underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in combating threats to national security and safeguarding vital resources,” he concluded.
