Wike ‘They Are Saying Fubara Should Assert His Right But The Lawmakers Cannot Assert Independence

The contradiction of those arguing for Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s independence while anticipating legislator allegiance to the governor has been challenged by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. He related conversations he had with several people who pushed him to get lawmakers to grant specific requests. He asked why, since parliamentarians were supposed to follow his orders, Fubara should not follow suit.

Although he acknowledged that the 27 MPs had declared their intention to join the APC, he clarified that he lacked the power to stop them. He argued that because of their allegiance to him, he was aware of their leaving.

The Rivers State’s 27 lawmakers who are loyalists to former Governor Nyesom Wike have been at loggerheads with the state governor, Siminalayi Fubara in the last couple of months. The Lawmakers who decamped to the APC from PDP only decided to drop their impeachment bid against the governor after the President mediated in the scuffle.

He said in a media chat with Channels TV, ”The lawmakers are loyal to me but he [Fubara] is not loyal to me. They said they wanted to go to APC and I have no right to stop anybody. You know one thing people will say is that I’m aware that they left to the APC. Fine I’m aware because they are loyal to me.

Some of them came to talk to me and they told me to beg the lawmakers to do some things and I said do you want them to obey me? They said Yes. I said what about the other person [Fubara] should he not obey me? They are saying he [Fubara] should assert his right but the lawmakers cannot assert independence. You see, people blow hot and cold at the same time. Anybody who supports an ingrate is naturally an ungrateful person.”
