At a church service Akpabio told Wike to look for an Ogoni person to succeed Fubara in 2027

Senator Godswill Akpabio has come under fire from Sydney Gbara, the Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State, for remarks he made at a church service in Tai Local Government Area.

Gbara stated in a recent interview with Punch that Akpabio pushed former Governor Nyesom Wike to support an Ogoni candidate running to replace current Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in the 2027 election. He urged Akpabio to desist from making such remarks and stressed the significance of fostering harmony and peace in Rivers State. Gbara advised Akpabio to put more effort into promoting unity and reconciliation than escalating political unrest in the state.

In Gbara’s words: At a [church] service, Akpabio called on Nyesom Wike to look for somebody from the Ogoni extraction who will succeed Governor Siminalayi Fubara in 2027. Such a statement is a huge embarrassment that could provoke a crisis as the governor has not told anyone that he would not seek re-election in 2027″.
